“Thermo Fisher Scientific Baltics” UAB in cooperation with Vilnius University invites prospective first year master students from VU Life Sciences Center, Faculty of Chemistry and Geosciences, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics to prepare Master final thesis at the Company.

Favorite students selected to prepare Master final thesis at the Company will receive Thermo Fisher Scientific Baltics nominal scholarship of 2200 Eur per single academic year. VU students who prepare the final thesis at the Company for two academic years and if study results do not worsen, are entitled for a second-year scholarship, therefore total scholarship would amount up to 4400 Eur*.

The Laser Nanophotonics Group, led by Prof. Mangirdas Malinauskas (Vilnius University, Faculty of Physics, Laser Research Center), has published an educational article on the theoretical and practical fundamentals of laser-based 3D multiphoton lithography and applied methodologies. This guide has been published in the prestigious journal Nature Reviews Methods Primers in collaboration with the pioneer of two-photon polymerization, Prof. Shoji Maruo (Yokohama University), the esteemed Prof. Georg von Freyman (Kaiserslautern University), and the remarkable Prof. Julia Greer (California Institute of Technology). Among the authors are also Dr. Edvinas Skliutas (Faculty of Physics, alumnus) and Dr. Greta Merkininkaitė (Faculty of Chemistry and Geosciences, VU). About the project

The two-year postdoc fellowship project will focus on developing next-generation bioceramic composites for periodontal disease prevention and clinical applications. Research will be carried out under the supervision of assoc. prof. dr. Inga Grigoravičiūtė.

The 2025 call specifically aims to encourage such university-created R&D solutions that contribute to one or more of the 17 goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and/or to the European Green Deal, which aims to implement the green transformation and ensure climate neutrality in the long run.

The targeted proof-of-concept activities of R&D solutions are:

• development and testing of a technology, model and/or prototype;
• testing of a technology, model and/or prototype when imitating real conditions.

One application can be awarded the sum of 5 000 to 20 000 EUR.

This year, on the fifth of December, the Committee for Doctoral Studies in Chemistry of Vilnius University and the Centre for Physical Sciences and Technology approved the Model Agreement for an Internationally Joint Supervision Thesis and Dual Degree Program between Vilnius University (Lithuania) and National Taipei University of Technology (Taiwan). This agreement aims to expand cooperation between the universities and to enable PhD students from both universities to conduct research at both universities and to obtain a dual degree.

Researchers from the Faculty of Chemistry and Geosciences of Vilnius University and Taipei National University of Technology have been collaborating for more than 15 years and welcomes another joint project.

On 21 November, the Faculty of History will host an International conference "New Cultural Landscape Interpretations: Perspectives from Geography and History" organised by (Post)Authoritarian Landscapes Research Centre.

Conference is dedicated to exploring innovative approaches and compelling case studies in the interdisciplinary study of cultural landscapes —including urban, agrarian, and modified natural environments. Bringing together scholars, researchers, and practitioners from the different disciplines, this event aims to delve into emerging themes and theoretical inquiries that are shaping contemporary landscape studies. Dr Maab Elsheikh is a 36-year-old Sudanese born and raised in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. She recently graduated in dentistry and holds a PhD from Kyushu University, Japan, specialising in biomaterials. She worked as a dentist in Sudan and Saudi Arabia for three years. Since October 2024, she has been working as a postdoctoral fellow in the Faculty of Chemistry and Geosciences, Vilnius University. She is happy and excited to start a new phase of her scientific career in Lithuania. She plans to further her knowledge, publish scientific papers, participate in national and international conferences, enjoy the sights of Vilnius city and go on a journey to meet new and interesting people.
