On April 30th, Dr. Ozcan Gulacar will visit the VU Faculty of Chemistry and Geosciences to deliver a presentation titled "Chemistry Through a Systems Lens: Navigating Global Challenges".

Dr. Ozcan Gulacar is a distinguished educator and researcher who aims to advance STEM education by applying innovative teaching methodologies and interdisciplinary approaches. He is currently a Professor of Teaching in the Department of Chemistry at the University of California, Davis, where he has served in various academic capacities since 2015. Dr. Gulacar holds a Ph.D. in Science Education, a Master's in Physical Chemistry and a Bachelor's in Chemistry Education.

During the presentation, Dr. Ozcan Gulacar will discuss how and why it is necessary to create meaningful, contextualized study programs that intentionally connect theory with practice. Drawing on the experiences and examples of North American chemistry educators, the researcher will explain how chemistry education can help students understand complex global challenges – the interconnections between society, the environment, the economy, and technology. Special attention will be given to showcasing how the integration of various topics into General Chemistry impacts students' motivation, self-confidence, and their perception of the relevance of their studies.

We invite the faculty community and guests to attend. The presentation will take place on April 30th at 2:00 PM at the VU Faculty of Chemistry and Geosciences, Institute of Chemistry, in room 141.

*The presentation will be held in English.
