The team of scientists from the Institute of Geosciences of Vilnius University participated in AGU2025, one of the largest and most influential international conferences for the global geoscience community, organized by the American Geophysical Union (AGU). The conference was held at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, USA, bringing together thousands of researchers from around the world.
At the conference, Dr. Vytautas Samalavičius, Dr. Gintaras Žaržojus, and Vilnius University master’s student Assemzhan Kunsakova presented research conducted within the framework of the GRANDE-U project, which focuses on applying advanced data-driven and artificial intelligence–based methods to groundwater studies. They delivered three scientific presentations:
- Machine learning–based prediction of Oxygen-18 in shallow Lithuanian groundwater.
- Linking groundwater level fluctuations with hydrochemical variability using remote sensing data.
- Groundwater level imputation using machine learning in the transboundary karst region of Lithuania and Latvia.
Vilnius University has received funding from the Research Council of Lithuania (LMTLT) under agreement No. S-IMPRESSU-24-3 for this research.
Additionally, during the AGU2025 conference, PhD student Laurynas Klimavičius presented the research he conducted during his studies and delivered a presentation titled “Future amplification of compound drought and heatwave events in the eastern part of the Baltic Sea region”.
Participation in AGU2025 provided an important opportunity to present ongoing research to the international scientific community, engage in discussions on current hydrogeological and climatological challenges, and strengthen international collaboration in the field of geosciences.
